I liked how Botchan wasn’t a hero nor a perfect person unlike what is oftenly portrayed as a main character in western novels. There were a lot of instances where I read books whose main characters were nothing but a Mary Sue. A bland, boring character with nothing for me to remember them with. Nothing for me to relate to. Botchan wasn’t perfect. He wasn’t that rich nor smart either. He was stubborn and honest to a fault. He wasn’t loved much by his family but he had someone like Kiyo who believed in the best in him. It made me think that even if we weren’t the best person out there, there’s probably a Kiyo who would still see the good in us. Botchan comes off as insufferable and arrogant at times and I, for one, don’t like those types of people but there’s something about him that stops me from hating him completely. Perhaps, it’s because he holds strong in his beliefs and sticks to his morals no matter how difficult. He prioritizes being true to himself over getting along with people and that‘s an incredibly admirable trait. “Botchan” was a very worthwhile read. It really made me reflect on morals in general and made me relate on how twisted human perceptions can be.
