No Longer Human. Not knowing how to be around nor deal with people, never showing one's true self. Keeping up a front just to be considered, "human". In the end, people around Yozo never actually understood him fully. I found it pitiful. I don't think Yozo found happiness properly; and he also never realized that he really had a capacity to love and touch another's life. His path to self-destruction was heartbreaking. Yozo and I have the same problem with people. I can't fully grasp them. Nor can I fully open up to anyone. We also live our lives under great self-loathing. We're similar in ways I'm not comfortable with. This story may not be a happy one, but it was a masterpiece.

"No Longer Human” is an English version of “Ningen Shikkaku” , the most important work by Osamu Dazai. It was translated by Donald Keen who played an important role in the Japanese literature. It is a story about the life of a man who is afraid of human interactions and tries to hide his feelings of fear by playing the clown when he socializes with people. It is said that this novel is Dazai’s autobiography and considered as his will. Ranked as the second-best novel in Japan behind Natsume Soseki’s Kokoro, this novel is loved by many people. It is also interesting to read the story in English. (じんじんさん)
