本書タイトルのもととなった詩です。ヘミングウェイ自身も参加したスペイン内戦のわずか二日間をモチーフにした本作品は、何故か恋愛もののようには感じません。

本編を通じて“ロバート ジョーダン”とフルネームで表記される主人公を与えられた読者という客観に埋め込まれるもの。それはまさにタイトルのもととなった詩の、テーマへの回帰なのではないでしょうか。
