In this work, Hearn pointed out one distinguished feature of then Japanese people, described as “Japanese smile”. I find it more important to note that during the stay in a more suburban part of Shimane Prefecture the Greece-born writer complained of the lack of privacy. This, as well as “Japanese smile”, should not be overlooked when it comes to Japanese studies done in the early Meiji Era. The collection of what Hearn saw mostly in Matsue or Oki Island, for example, is a valuable source which is enabled to recognize the everyday life of ordinary citizens.
