(スエーデンの大学院で学んでいた時分に、学内のポータルにアップしていたものを引っ越しています) What is Cardboard House? It is a “house” built by a homeless people in a public place. The book defines Cardboard House as a place where those who chose to live on the street without any other means can manage to find his own existence. Sample houses can be found in the following link (deleted). The author Nagashima was the junior year architecture college student when he began to study cardboard houses. To write his bachelor thesis he examined as many as 70 houses around his neighbor Nagoya city and categorized them into some types based on constructional structures. Some stood as shacks, some as tents, some as a combination of a shack and a tent. Minority variation included types of a sleeping bag, a camping car, 2 x 4, Tarp, etc. His approach was rather ethnographic; he usually spent 1-2 weeks to one month just to get acquainted before asking a homeless man to allow him to observe and record inside the house. Even after he completed an investigation, he tried to maintain a relationship with homeless peoples. His investigation period spanned from April 2002 to Jan 2005. As a house broker does, he put floor plans of 38 houses, with memories of each house owner in this book. On the surface this book is just ethnographic records of living reality of homeless people at that time in Nagoya city. But I would say I have never read this vivid and convincing sarcasm against government policy which (still) abandons helping poor, helpless people. It is a very good example that recording the simple reality and showing as they are is much more eloquent than anything. The same things is very true with the consequences of atomic bombs dropped to Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

白黒だったので、写真とか絵が見にくいのがちょっと難点でしたが、内容自体はとても面白かった。豪華カラー版とかでたら見たいな。
